Roberto Martinez has moved to clarify the circumstances surrounding Antonio Silva's absence from Portugal's 2026 World Cup squad, addressing lingering questions about a security breach that occurred during Euro 2024. The Benfica centre-back accidentally disclosed tactical information ahead of Portugal's group-stage match against Georgia, triggering an internal investigation that ultimately cleared him of any disciplinary wrongdoing.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, Martinez emphasised that the 22-year-old's omission from the tournament roster stems entirely from on-field performance and domestic form rather than any fallout from the previous incident. "When there's a tournament and information leaks out, it's a very serious situation," the Spanish manager explained. "At that time, we investigated and it was an accident. It wasn't a lack of discipline. Antonio learned from it, but that's not part of the decision now."
Domestic Form Dictates Selection
Silva's exclusion reflects his struggles under Jose Mourinho at Benfica this season. The international defender has lost his starting position to 24-year-old Tomas Araujo, a development that ultimately swayed Martinez's selection process. Despite earning seven caps after the Euro 2024 incident and featuring in warm-up matches as recently as March, Silva's reduced club minutes proved decisive in the manager's decision-making.
Martinez stressed that two years have elapsed since the Georgia fixture and that institutional memory does not govern current team composition. "It happens in group dynamics and it's important to remember the most important thing: it was an accident and not an act of indiscipline," he stated, firmly dismissing ongoing rumours of lasting disciplinary consequences.
World Cup Challenge Ahead
Portugal face a demanding 2026 World Cup campaign after drawing a competitive Group K containing DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia. The Portuguese federation will open their tournament on June 17 at Houston's NRG Stadium, where depth at centre-back will prove crucial across three group-stage fixtures. Silva now enters a critical period to rebuild his club form and international relevance before attempting a comeback to the national team fold.
