The Benfica centre-back accidentally disclosed tactical information ahead of Portugal's group-stage match against Georgia, triggering an internal investigation that ultimately cleared him of any disciplinary wrongdoing.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, Martinez emphasised that the 22-year-old's omission from the tournament roster stems entirely from on-field performance and domestic form rather than any fallout from the previous incident. "When there's a tournament and information leaks out, it's a very serious situation," the Spanish manager explained. "At that time, we investigated and it was an accident. It wasn't a lack of discipline. Antonio learned from it, but that's not part of the decision now."
Domestic Form Dictates Selection
Silva's exclusion reflects his struggles under Jose Mourinho at Benfica this season. The international defender has lost his starting position to 24-year-old Tomas Araujo, a development that ultimately swayed Martinez's selection process.
