Arteta Offers Hope on Timber's Champions League Final Return

Mikel Arteta has provided an encouraging update on Jurrien Timber's fitness, suggesting the Arsenal defender could yet feature in next weekend's Champions League final despite being sidelined since March with a groin injury. While acknowledging the right-back remains behind schedule in his recovery, the Arsenal boss has not ruled out a dramatic return for the club's European showpiece.

Timber has been one of Arsenal's standout performers this season, making his two-month absence deeply felt across the defensive line. The injury occurred during domestic action, and initial assessments suggested a shorter layoff. However, the setback has proven more stubborn than anticipated, leaving Arsenal depleted at full-back with Ben White also ruled out until summer. Speaking at Thursday's press conference, Arteta outlined the current status: "Jurrien, let's hope he can do the same in the next few days. But he's still a little further behind Mikel at that moment," referring to fellow injury returnee Mikel Merino.

The Physical Challenge of Return

Recovery specialists have highlighted the difficulty facing Timber in making a swift comeback. Stephen Smith, CEO of performance analytics firm Kitman Labs, explained that extended absence creates compounding obstacles. "If the player is not on the field and training at this point after two months out, think of the match sharpness they have lost," Smith told Metro. "Not to say it is impossible, it is not like he has been sat at home, I am sure they are doing a lot of work with him."

The timing remains precarious. Arsenal's depleted defensive resources mean the club faces a difficult calculation: whether throwing Timber into a decisive European match without full preparation could backfire, or whether his quality justifies the risk. The Premier League title win has raised expectations, yet the Champions League final demands near-perfect physical conditioning. Smith suggested Arsenal's injury crisis might force their hand: "Arsenal are short of numbers with Ben White out so it could maybe change their posture towards that and how they think about utilising Timber in these final weeks."

With the final days before Europe's biggest club competition now in focus, Timber's availability could prove decisive in how Arteta shapes his tactical approach against a formidable opponent.
