Pau Cubarsi Eyes Barcelona Captain Role as Defender Backs

Pau Cubarsi has articulated his ambition to become Barcelona's primary defensive leader, declaring unwavering support for Hansi Flick's attacking philosophy despite recent Champions League disappointment. The 19-year-old centre-back, who has made 128 appearances since his January 2024 debut, believes the squad remains fully committed to the manager's high-pressing system.

Speaking to Catalunya Radio, Cubarsi explained how defenders occupy a unique vantage point to influence matches. "I am 19 years old and I have a long way to go, but I must accumulate experience and that over time will also help me try to take on the role of leader, because the defender, along with the goalkeeper, sees the entire pitch and it is important to progress in that," he said. His trajectory mirrors that of elite centre-backs who transitioned into captaincy roles, combining technical excellence with vocal authority on the pitch.

Learning from Setbacks

Cubarsi's red card against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final proved costly, yet he views such moments as instructive rather than discouraging. He acknowledged that an advanced defensive line carries inherent risks but argued the tactical framework has delivered tangible silverware. "The manager's philosophy is this and we are going to the death with it, we have won many titles playing like this... when concentrated it turns out very well, as we have seen," he stated. This season, he appeared in 48 matches across four competitions, cementing his status as Flick's undisputed starter.

The defender's trophy haul already includes two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, two Spanish Super Cups, and an Olympic gold medal—extraordinary achievements for a player still in his teenage years. However, both he and the squad harbour unfinished business. "They are two consecutive leagues that recognise the spectacular level of what you have done throughout the season, but we still have those thorns of the Champions League and the Cup," Cubarsi reflected.

Leadership Development and World Cup Ambitions

Cubarsi credited outgoing teammate Inigo Martinez for accelerating his maturation, crediting the veteran for lessons now embedded in his game. Alongside Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, and Andreas Christensen, he forms part of Barcelona's defensive framework during their domestic resurgence. As the season concludes with a fixture against Valencia, Cubarsi's focus shifts toward securing a starting berth with the Spain national team under Luis de la Fuente for the upcoming World Cup. "I try to give everything in every divided ball so that the manager has confidence in me. We will try to compete well for this World Cup," he concluded, signalling his determination to translate club form into international recognition.
