Vincent Kompany revealed an amusing mishap from Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title parade, confessing he temporarily misplaced the prestigious Meisterschale trophy. The Belgian manager left the championship silverware in his kitchen at home while preparing for the official Munich city centre celebrations, creating a frantic scramble to retrieve it before the team's public reception.
Kompany explained the comedic blunder to reporters, describing the moment when he realised the trophy's absence. "We were here and suddenly the trophy was missing! Then I remembered: 'Oh, it was at our house'. It was lying in the kitchen," the former Manchester City defender said. He admitted someone had handed him the award the previous evening with instructions to bring it to the festivities, but the instruction slipped his mind during the excitement of the title win.
Last-Minute Trophy Recovery
His wife Carla Higgs proved instrumental in resolving the crisis, rushing the Meisterschale to Marienplatz just as the team arrived at Munich Town Hall. The trophy reached the Great Hall in perfect timing—arriving precisely as Bayern president Herbert Hainer was addressing the gathered crowd and dignitaries. The squad had already ascended to the second floor when the missing silverware finally materialised, allowing the celebration to proceed without further delay.
Once recovered, the players moved to the Town Hall balcony to present the trophy to thousands of supporters assembled below. The atmosphere remained electric throughout, with the Meisterschale circulating among the squad as they sang and danced. The moment held special significance for midfielder Leon Goretzka, whose final appearance in a Bayern shirt generated an emotional response from fans. The club honoured his departure by playing Herbert Grönemeyer's iconic anthem "Bochum," reflecting Goretzka's connection to his hometown.
Kompany's maiden season at Bayern has delivered the Bundesliga title despite unexpected challenges, though the focus now shifts to Saturday's DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart in Berlin. The manager will be hoping to secure a domestic double and perhaps ensure the cup trophy remains in safer hands than his kitchen counter.
