Southampton Expelled from Championship Play-Offs Over

Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-offs following an independent disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, with the club admitting to multiple breaches of EFL regulations involving unauthorised filming of rival training sessions. The decision means Middlesbrough will replace them in the final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday, 23 May, though Southampton's appeal could alter the outcome.

The Saints had progressed to the play-off final after beating Middlesbrough 2-1 across two legs in their semi-final, but the spying controversy has overshadowed that achievement. Southampton admitted to breaching EFL rules prohibiting observation of another club's training within 72 hours of a scheduled fixture. The breaches involved matches against Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026, and Middlesbrough in May 2026.

Points Deduction and Disciplinary Action

Beyond the play-off expulsion, Southampton received a four-point deduction to be applied to the 2026-27 Championship season, alongside a formal reprimand across all charges. The club was initially charged on Friday, 8 May, with additional charges levelled on Sunday, 17 May after further breaches came to light during the 2025-26 campaign. The EFL stated that Southampton admitted to failing to act with utmost good faith, a fundamental requirement for all member clubs.

This scandal echoes a previous incident involving Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa, who were fined £200,000 in 2019 for similar unauthorised scouting activities. However, that case preceded stricter EFL enforcement measures designed to prevent such violations. The governing body has since tightened regulations to protect the integrity of competition, making Southampton's punishment notably harsher than its historical precedent.

Appeal and Uncertainty Ahead

Southampton has confirmed they intend to appeal the disciplinary commission's decision, with both parties attempting to resolve proceedings by Wednesday, 20 May—just three days before the final. Any successful appeal could reinstate the Saints and potentially remove Middlesbrough, adding another layer of complexity to an already contentious situation. The EFL will announce further details once the appeal process concludes, leaving the Championship play-off final under a cloud of uncertainty heading into the weekend.
