Roy Keane Slams Man Utd's "Circus Act" Over Bruno Fernandes

Roy Keane launched a scathing critique of Manchester United's players for their fixation on Bruno Fernandes' individual milestone during the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest. The former United captain said he was "raging" at how the squad celebrated the Portuguese midfielder's 20th assist of the 2025-26 Premier League season, which equalled the record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Speaking on The Overlap, Keane expressed frustration at what he viewed as a damaging shift in the club's mentality. Rather than treating the assist as a natural byproduct of winning, players appeared to be chasing the statistical achievement itself. "What I heard at United the weekend, honestly, I was raging with it," he said. "The whole chat about his assists, and players talking about assists. The game was about his assists." Keane highlighted that even Fernandes himself mentioned the record during his post-match interview, while the captain acknowledged prioritising passes over shots.

A Wider Problem at Old Trafford

Keane's grievance extended beyond a single moment. He argued the obsession with Fernandes' record exposed a fundamental issue within the squad's winning culture. "How can a footballer's mindset be going out to a match and be talking about some individual record?" he questioned. The legendary midfielder pointed out that Bryan Mbeumo, the goalscorer who benefited from the assist, received far less acclaim than the playmaker. "What about the guy who scored the goal?" Keane asked. "He won't be winning trophies, not with that mindset."

The criticism cuts deeper given United's defensive vulnerabilities in the match. Despite the attacking prowess on display, the team conceded twice—a concerning pattern at a club expected to challenge for major honours. Keane's verdict was damning: "It's a circus act." He argued that celebrating individual milestones while gifting away goals represents a fundamental disconnect from championship mentality.

Fernandes remains one of United's most creative players, but Keane's intervention suggests the club's internal culture requires examination. With one Premier League fixture remaining—a trip to Brighton on May 24—the midfielder will have one final opportunity to add to his tally, though the debate over priorities at United will likely persist.
