Police Scotland has launched a formal investigation into "unacceptable levels of violence" that erupted following Celtic's Scottish Premiership title-clinching victory over Hearts at Celtic Park. The disorder, which saw thousands of supporters gather in Glasgow's city centre, left multiple police officers injured and Hearts personnel in what the Edinburgh club described as a "disturbing" situation.
The trouble began after Celtic's 3-1 triumph secured the league title, with approximately 3,000 fans assembling in the Trongate area on Saturday afternoon. What started as celebratory gatherings quickly escalated into confrontations with law enforcement. Authorities confirmed that glass bottles and other projectiles were thrown at officers who were attempting to manage crowds and assist with medical emergencies during the evening's events.
Pitch Invasion Chaos at Celtic Park
The violence extended beyond city centre celebrations to the stadium itself. As Martin O'Neill's side secured the decisive points, a massive pitch invasion forced thousands of supporters onto the playing surface, creating chaotic scenes that prompted Hearts players and staff to be hastily escorted from the field. Hearts responded with a strongly-worded statement condemning the incidents, stating that their personnel experienced "serious physical and verbal abuse" both during the pitch incursion and in surrounding areas.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland expressed serious concern over the behaviour, stating that "being assaulted is not part of the job" and pledging that those responsible would face identification and arrest. He called for "urgent discussions with Celtic, wider Scottish football authorities and other stakeholders, including Glasgow City Council" to prevent recurrence of such disorder. Despite significant police resources being deployed to affected areas, the situation spiralled despite prior preparation and road closures already being implemented.
Scale of Disorder and Investigation
Police Scotland has confirmed it is engaging directly with Hearts to determine whether any specific players were victims of assault during the final moments at Parkhead. The club's grounds and surrounding Glasgow streets were left awash with litter and green and white debris following the celebrations. The primary focus now remains on identifying the systemic failures that allowed this disorder to escalate and establishing safeguards ahead of future Scottish Premiership milestones.
