Manuel Neuer is set to extend his career at FC Bayern Munich after agreeing fresh terms with the Bundesliga giants. Sky Sports and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Wednesday that the 40-year-old club captain has accepted a substantial pay cut to remain between the posts for another season.
The legendary goalkeeper will sign a one-year contract extension before Saturday's final Bundesliga match against 1. FC Köln, accepting a reduced package of up to €20 million gross annually. Bayern officials had consistently maintained that the extension decision rested solely with Neuer, and honorary president Uli Hoeneß expressed his preference for the veteran to continue. "If it were up to me, we would keep him for another year," Hoeneß stated on his podcast.
Goalkeeper Succession Plan Takes Shape
Jonas Urbig, the 22-year-old understudy, will continue rotating with Neuer this season while assuming deeper mentoring responsibilities under the captain's guidance. Urbig has already made 21 appearances this campaign, establishing himself as the natural successor. The club has a clear agreement in place regarding the goalkeeper hierarchy, with:
- Neuer as first-choice goalkeeper
- Urbig alternating and shadowing the veteran
- Sven Ulreich remaining as third-choice with his own contract extension pending
- Leonard Prescott, the home-grown prospect, expected to seek regular playing time through a loan deal
Neuer's performances in crucial matches this season have underscored his enduring importance to Bayern's Champions League and domestic ambitions. His standout display against Real Madrid in the quarter-final's first leg exemplified his continued excellence at elite level.
International Retirement Remains Firm
Despite speculation that Neuer could feature on Germany's provisional 55-man World Cup squad for 2026, the goalkeeper has repeatedly ruled out reversing his international retirement. After his masterclass against Real Madrid, he stated emphatically: "We don't need to bring this up at all. I've said my piece and am now focusing on FC Bayern."
National team manager Julian Nagelsmann has moved forward with Oliver Baumann of TSG Hoffenheim as his established number one, following Marc-André ter Stegen's injury. Nagelsmann dismissed the notion of recalling Neuer, despite previous precedent—he famously floated a Toni Kroos comeback in December 2023 that materialised for Euro 2024. The manager acknowledged that reinstating Neuer could destabilise team harmony, immediately demoting the previously assured Baumann to backup status. With the DFB-Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart looming next week, Neuer's focus remains exclusively on delivering silverware for Bayern this season.
