Tjark Ernst extended his remarkable defensive run to three consecutive clean sheets as Feyenoord defeated AZ Alkmaar 2-0 on Saturday evening. The German goalkeeper has now kept AZ, FC Utrecht, and PEC Zwolle at bay in successive matches, showcasing impressive form that has become central to his club's recent success in the Eredivisie.
Ernst spoke candidly with ESPN following the victory, reflecting on the team's defensive organisation. "It feels good, not only for me, but for the whole team. We have defended well in the last three matches, really as a team," he explained. "Today we also defended the crosses well. We knew today's opponents were very good, so that's why I'm very happy that we didn't concede any goals today." The goalkeeper's composure extends beyond the pitch—his communication with teammates and positioning have been instrumental in shutting out high-quality attacking threats.
The Penalty Controversy and VAR Review
The match's most contentious moment arrived just before half-time when Mexx Meerdink went down in the penalty area under Ernst's challenge. Referee Danny Makkelie initially pointed to the spot, but after VAR intervention, he overturned the decision and ruled no penalty. Ernst defended his actions with clear conviction. "I didn't feel that I touched him," he said immediately after the match. "That's also what I immediately said to the referee."
In post-match discussion with Makkelie, Ernst learned the official's reasoning. The referee acknowledged slight contact but deemed it insufficient for a penalty award. "There may have been slight contact, but that it was not enough for a penalty," Ernst recalled. The goalkeeper also highlighted contextual factors: the ball's trajectory was heading out of play, and any contact was marginal at best. "You can also see where the ball is going: out of play. It is not going in the direction of the goal," he observed.
Ernst acknowledged the visual evidence showing minimal foot movement during the incident. "I can now see that my foot moves a little. But the referee said that, in his view, it was not enough for a penalty. Also because the ball was going out, and because the contact was very slight. But at the time itself I felt nothing." Ultimately, the goalkeeper expressed satisfaction with the outcome. "I'm absolutely happy that no penalty was given. But I also think it was the right decision." With this victory securing Feyenoord's defensive solidity in the league, Ernst's form will be crucial as his side pushes up the Eredivisie table in the coming fixtures.
