Anthony Correia Deploys Military Training to Revive

Anthony Correia has implemented an unconventional recovery strategy at FC Utrecht, turning to intensive military endurance exercises during the international break to rebuild team morale and mental resilience. The Eredivisie club had stumbled through the opening weeks of the season, prompting the manager to take drastic action with high-intensity physical and psychological conditioning.

Breaking Down Mental Barriers Through Extreme Training

The military exercise pushed players and coaching staff to their physical and mental limits. Correia participated alongside his squad, experiencing firsthand the grueling nature of the challenge. "If I had known beforehand what we were going to do, I might well have said: it is for the players and not for the staff," Correia told De Telegraaf, reflecting on the intensity of the program.

As fatigue mounted, silence fell over the group. "Nobody was talking any more, everyone was surviving," Correia explained. The structure created interdependence—failure by one participant meant additional tasks for the entire team. This enforced teamwork tested not just physical endurance but mental fortitude. The manager even found himself being pushed by soldiers to maintain pace, unable to fall behind despite his leadership position.

Strategic Purpose Beyond Physical Conditioning

Correia's approach targeted specific psychological needs within the squad:

  • Building mental resilience under pressure
  • Strengthening group cohesion and trust
  • Developing psychological toughness transferable to match performance
  • Restoring confidence after a poor start to the campaign

While traditional team-building activities like padel or paintball foster camaraderie, Correia believes the psychological pressure of military training produces deeper transformation. "The mental pressure is tested more here. And that is the thing that, if you look at the matches, may well benefit us the most. You can take that on to the pitch as well," he stated.

Utrecht's revival will be tested immediately as they return to Eredivisie action on Sunday at home against bottom-placed Willem II. The club's ability to convert military-forged mental toughness into results will determine whether Correia's drastic measure proves effective or merely a footnote in a difficult season.
