The 29-year-old striker arrives at a club desperate for goals after their return to the Premier League following a 25-year absence, with ex-Sky Blues forward Clinton Morrison highlighting the forward's renewed hunger and fitness as key assets in the fight for survival.
Awoniyi spent four seasons at Forest, helping the club navigate three separate relegation battles while contributing 10 goals in his debut campaign and 23 across all competitions. However, inconsistent playing time and injury setbacks in May 2025 limited his impact in recent months. Morrison observed that the striker's situation has fundamentally changed at Coventry. "You're spot on when you say he looks much better. He looks hungry. At Forest, it was stop-start with injuries, and when you're not the number one, coming off the bench for five minutes, you don't get confidence," Morrison told GOAL.
International Ambitions and Competition
With Victor Osimhen entrenched as Nigeria's primary striker, Awoniyi faces a steep climb back into the national team fold. His last international appearance came in 2023, leaving a three-year gap in his 10-cap record. Yet the prospect of consistent club football—something rarely achieved during his Forest tenure—could reignite his case for manager consideration. Morrison emphasized the importance of early momentum: "Once he gets that first goal, you get the monkey off your back and you go on a good run. That's what he'll be hoping for."
Frank Lampard's formation adjustments and Coventry's attacking depth offer encouragement.
