Nico O'Reilly Set for Decade as England Left-Back, Shaw

Nico O'Reilly has emerged as England's long-term solution at left-back, with former international Michael Gray backing the Manchester City defender to dominate the position for the next ten years. The 21-year-old's meteoric rise since his competitive debut in August 2024 has positioned him ahead of established rivals, raising questions about the future international prospects of Luke Shaw and other contenders for the role.

O'Reilly's rapid ascent through City's ranks has been remarkable. The academy product has made over 50 appearances this season and scored a memorable brace in the 2026 Carabao Cup final, claiming his first major honour at club level. Gray, who earned three senior caps for England at left-back in 1999 while with Sunderland, highlighted O'Reilly's consistency in European competition as a defining factor. "He would be my choice now, 100%," Gray told GOAL exclusively. "When we've seen him in an England shirt, he's never let anybody down. He's become Mr. Reliable at left-back or whatever position they seem to play him in."

Shaw's Experience Versus Youth and Fitness

Shaw's international future faces genuine uncertainty. While Gray acknowledged the Manchester United defender's experience and involvement in major tournaments, fitness concerns loom large. The 29-year-old has endured multiple injury absences at Old Trafford throughout his career, a factor that weighs heavily on Thomas Tuchel's World Cup planning. "The worry is going to be with Thomas Tuchel—and this goes for quite a few players—is he's got to rely on players staying fit," Gray explained. "That's one of the worries he's going to have with people like Luke Shaw. Whereas if Nico O'Reilly goes, you don't worry about that much. He's young, his muscles are not going to break down in a tournament like that."

Competition for the left-back position extends beyond Shaw. Lewis Hall, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Tino Livramento, and Djed Spence are all vying for recognition, creating a congested landscape that makes Shaw's path to the World Cup squad increasingly difficult. Gray's assessment was unambiguous: "Even if everybody's fit, from what I've seen this season from every single player who's played in that left-back position, Nico O'Reilly would be my number one, hands down."

World Cup Squad Selection Timeline

The Football Association has confirmed that Tuchel will announce England's World Cup squad on May 22. A provisional party of up to 55 players must be submitted by May 11, with final squad adjustments permitted until May 30. The timing creates logistical challenges, as squad selections are being made just two days before the Premier League season concludes, risking last-day injuries affecting availability.

O'Reilly's pedigree under Pep Guardiola—thriving in a system that allows defensive players creative freedom—appears ideally suited to modern international football. With youth, durability, and proven big-game experience already on his résumé, the Manchester City prospect stands poised to define England's left-back position for a generation as the Three Lions pursue global glory in North America.
