Mikel Arteta defended his controversial tactical decision to withdraw Martin Zubimendi just 39 minutes after introducing him during Arsenal's 1-0 victory over West Ham. The substitution came as part of a defensive shuffle following Ben White's knee injury in the 28th minute, which forced the Arsenal manager into an unconventional reshuffle that ultimately backfired.
When White departed early in the first half, Arteta opted to deploy Zubimendi in an unfamiliar role while pushing Declan Rice into the right-back position. This experiment disrupted Arsenal's midfield balance and cost them their early momentum. By the 67th minute, with the team struggling to maintain control, Arteta withdrew Zubimendi for Kai Havertz, restoring Rice to his natural central position. "It is never easy to do that to a player, especially someone with Martin's quality," Arteta acknowledged post-match. "But the game was panning out in a manner where we had to change it. We lost some of our early momentum and the balance wasn't right with Dec out of the middle."
Defensive Crisis Forces Tactical Gamble
Arsenal's injury situation worsened when Riccardo Calafiori also suffered a problem at half-time, forcing the introduction of Cristhian Mosquera to strengthen the backline. This cascade of disruptions left Arteta managing an increasingly makeshift defence against a resilient West Ham side. The Arsenal boss acknowledged the predicament: "We are thin in those positions now, but the attitude and the courage of the players who stepped in—especially Mosquera and Myles Lewis-Skelly—was outstanding under huge pressure."
Gary Neville and other pundits criticised the Rice repositioning, with the former Manchester United defender claiming he was "stunned" by the call. However, Arteta stood by his pragmatic approach, emphasising that managerial decisions must prioritise winning matches over conventional formations. Leandro Trossard's 83rd-minute finish ultimately vindicated the manager's resilience, extending Arsenal's lead to five points at the top of the Premier League table.
Arteta concluded that Arsenal's survival through chaos would define their title challenge. With White's injury "not looking good" and defensive options depleted, the Gunners face a critical recovery period before their next fixture, where maintaining their league position remains the priority.
