The 43-year-old former England international, who took the helm in March, managed only six league games and nine matches overall before circumstances made his continued tenure impossible.
Defoe replaced Neal Ardley at the Cards and oversaw a solid pre-season that included a 10th-place finish in his previous season's campaigns. However, the ex-Tottenham striker revealed through an Instagram statement that off-field circumstances forced his exit just two weeks before Woking's opening fixture against Sutton United. "It is with regret that circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position," Defoe wrote, adding that he remained proud of the coaching work undertaken during his brief spell.
