Cole Palmer £150m Transfer: Man Utd Move If Chelsea Miss Top

Cole Palmer would seriously consider leaving Chelsea if the club fails to secure European football, according to former Blues defender Glen Johnson. The England playmaker, currently tied to Stamford Bridge until 2033, has attracted interest from Manchester United as the Red Devils' fortunes have improved dramatically this season.

Johnson, speaking exclusively to GOAL, believes a record-breaking bid in the region of £150 million would force Chelsea's hand, particularly if they miss the top four. "I think he would want them to listen," Johnson stated. "If they miss out on the top four, they're not competing at the top, and obviously a team that pays is going to be a top, top club. So it would definitely get Cole's attention."

Shifting Fortunes in Manchester Rivalry

The landscape of English football has shifted dramatically in recent months. Chelsea claimed the Club World Cup in 2025 while United languished in 15th place. Now the positions have reversed, with United climbing the table while Chelsea sit ninth with three games remaining. This reversal has made a switch to Old Trafford suddenly plausible for Palmer, a Manchester-born academy product and boyhood United supporter.

Johnson highlighted the emotional pull of a homecoming: "If you asked that question a year ago, we'd just burst out laughing. But now football changes very quickly and it's almost like they've swapped places. United look like they're on the march. To go home and play your football for a big, big club, that would be interesting too."

Off-Field Instability Takes Its Toll

Palmer's form has suffered this season, with injuries limiting his impact and preventing him from replicating his stunning debut campaign when he scored 25 goals and won the PFA Young Player of the Year. Beyond physical setbacks, the constant managerial upheaval at Chelsea—including the departures of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior—has disrupted his development and confidence.

Johnson acknowledged the psychological impact of Chelsea's instability: "The players have to be professional and focus on themselves the best way they can, but at the same time it's hard because it just knocks your momentum. You start buying into a new manager's philosophy, working hard the way he wants you to do, and then he's sacked a month later and you've got to start again."

With European qualification slipping away and managerial chaos continuing at Stamford Bridge, Palmer's future at Chelsea faces genuine uncertainty heading into the final weeks of the season. If United's resurgence continues, a summer move could reshape the power balance in English football.
