Leeds' Buonanotte Transfer Fails as Wilson Deal Collapses

Facundo Buonanotte's loan spell at Leeds United has proven a disappointment after the Argentine midfielder arrived from Brighton in January with high expectations. The 21-year-old has managed just three appearances totalling 24 minutes in the Premier League, with his sole start—an FA Cup clash against Birmingham—ending in a half-time substitution. His last outing came on February 15, and he has not featured since, effectively seeing his 2024-25 campaign written off.

Wilson Miss Shaped Leeds' Recruitment

Leeds' creative struggles stem largely from their failure to land Harry Wilson from Fulham during the summer transfer window. The Wales international deal collapsed at deadline, leaving the club searching for the attacking midfielder they desperately needed for their Premier League return. That void ultimately led to Buonanotte's arrival, but the South American has failed to fill the role effectively.

Title-winning Leeds legend Tony Dorigo offered insight into the situation, telling GOAL: "That type of player is the last one that we wanted to go into this Premier League season without. We missed out on Wilson, and then Buonanotte came in. He had opportunities but didn't take them. The other players in that position were simply playing better—that's football at this level."

Competitive Environment and Limited Opportunities

Buonanotte had impressed during a loan at Leicester City in the previous season as the Foxes struggled toward relegation, suggesting he possessed the creative spark Leeds needed. However, competition for places proved too intense. His half-time withdrawal against Birmingham epitomized his struggles, and the arrival of other attacking options has pushed him further down the pecking order. At just 21 years old, the midfielder remains contracted to Brighton until 2028, leaving questions about his next move.

Leeds, now with Premier League safety virtually assured, will pursue fresh recruitment targets when the transfer market reopens on June 15. Whether Buonanotte receives another chance or departs on loan remains uncertain, but his stock has clearly diminished after this unsuccessful spell in West Yorkshire. Another newly-promoted club or a move abroad may represent his best path to regular football and continued development.
