Julian Nagelsmann is poised to select Maximilian Beier for Germany's World Cup squad, according to Sky Deutschland, rewarding the Borussia Dortmund forward despite his absence from recent international fixtures. The 23-year-old will compete in his second major tournament after featuring at Euro 2024 on home soil, though his recent omission from friendlies and qualifiers had cast doubt on his prospects.
Beier last appeared for the German national team in October's World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland. Since then, Nagelsmann excluded him from both final qualifying matches and warm-up games against Switzerland. However, his domestic form has been commanding. Excluding centre-forwards, Beier ranked as Germany's most productive attacker this season, accumulating 10 goals and 10 assists—20 points total—for the Bundesliga side.
Club Form Overrides Recent Omission
The striker's inclusion addresses a strategic gap in Germany's forward contingent. When discussing the counter-attacking forward position in March, Nagelsmann identified three candidates with similar profiles: Beier, Karim Adeyemi, and Kevin Schade. "One, or at most two, of these will make the cut," the manager stated, explaining that all three possessed comparable playing styles and opportunities.
Beier's selection over the previous months of international duty reflects Nagelsmann's emphasis on consistency at club level. Since his international debut in June 2024, he has earned seven caps without a goal, yet his performances for Dortmund have justified faith from the coaching staff. The tournament runs from 11-19 June in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
